1. Parking Garages are called Car Parks.
This reminds me of the movie cars. I just imagine the cars coming alive and racing or something like that. Totally better than Car Parks.
2. Squash is not the same as juice.
There are these bottles of concentrated fruit juice, but these are supposed to be mixed in with water. Do Not, I repeat Do NOT do what I did and pour a glass thinking that they call juice squash. It tastes awful.
3. UNI and College are different.
This one may be obvious, but it’s a good reminder that College in America is equivalent to their High School. Their schooling goes: Primary School, Secondary School, College, and then UNI.
4. Lemonade is always carbonated here.
There is no time that you can pour a glass of lemonade without it fizzing. Tastes good though.
5. There are school rivalries.
There are two UNI’s in most larger towns, such as here in York: St. John University (my UNI) and York University. The rivalry is real. There are Yik Yak fights and downgrading on both sides. It’s the way University of Michigan and Michigan State University are back home, but it’s less about sports and the UNIs are no more than fifteen minutes away from each other.
6. The music is older.
Sure there are redubbed techno songs playing, but you cannot go on a “night out” without hearing music from the 80’s or early 2000’s. Livin la vida Loca, Mr. Brightside, Livin on a prayer, Take me Out, Don’t Stop Believing, and Come on Eileen.
7. Composting is really important.
Now, I know it’s growing in the states, but here at my UNI we actually have to put food waste into a specific bin and regular “litter/rubbish” into a regular garbage bag. They don’t typically have garbage disposals, which honestly seems better for the environment.
8. A pregnant woman can wee in a policeman’s hat.
If there are no bathrooms available, a pregnant woman can pee in a policeman’s hat. What?
9. Policemen do not carry weapons.
That’s right. Policemen only carry sticks. They do not have guns or any form of weapon. In America, this would be really unordinary, but in light of recent events it seems Britain’s control on weapons is a good thing. Check the facts: http://blogs.channel4.com/factcheck/gun-control-what-can-america-learn-from-britain/12466.
10. Tax is included.
Whenever you are looking to buy something, you do not have to sit there adding another 10% to the total. The prices here already include tax. When something says a pound, it literally is a pound.
